Metabarcoding applied to the analysis of cave bat diet.
Project aims:
The overall goal is to identify and quantify, using DNA metabarcoding, insects eaten by insectivorous cave bats in three Brazilian ecosystems, the Atlantic rainforest, the Caatinga and the Amazon Forest. We will characterize the richness of the guano samples, determine the diversity of food sources, look for preferred insects for each bat species, and investigate the occurrence of agriculture pests as bat food.
objetivo principal identificar e quantificar, através do método de DNA metabarcoding, os insetos consumidos por morcegos cavernícolas em três ecossistemas brasileiros, a Mata Atlântica, a Caatinga e a Floresta Amazônica. Para tanto, este projeto irá: 1) Caracterizar a riqueza de itens alimentares em amostras de guano provenientes de diferentes ambientes; 2) Determinar a diversidade de itens alimentares e identificar os recursos mais utilizados; 3) Investigar a existência de preferências espécie-específicas dos morcegos por certas presas ou a existência de sobreposição de dietas; 4) Investigar a ocorrência no guano de insetos caracterizados como “pragas agrícolas” ou com potencial de atuarem como vetores de doenças ao ser humano.
